Battle of the Subcompact SUVs: 2017 Honda HR-V versus 2017 Mazda CX-3

No other division of the market is currently as red-hot as the subcompact SUV segment. Two of the industry leaders in this vehicle class are Honda’s HR-V and Mazda’s CX-3. These two SUVs receive rave reviews from automotive industry pundits and drivers, but what happens when you compare the two side by side? In the space below, you’ll see the results and which vehicle we believe represents the better overall value for Florida shoppers.

What’s That Name?

Exterior Comparison: 2017 HR-V vs. 2017 CX-3

Both the 2017 HR-V and CX-3 feature the unique styling aspects that are prevalent with many subcompact SUVs on the market today. Mazda’s CX-3 could probably be deemed a bit sportier than the HR-V, but the difference isn’t dramatic. As far as exterior dimensions, the two vehicles are almost mirror images of each other within an inch or two. Neither separates itself from the other in the standard exterior equipment department either. In light of all this, we feel like this category is too close to call.

Interior Comparison: 2017 HR-V vs. 2017 CX-3

This category is, quite simply, a complete blowout in favor of the HR-V. While both vehicles offer a roomy experience for front row occupants, the rear seating area in the Mazda CX-3 is extremely tight and cramped. Honda’s HR-V offers much more space for rear seat occupants when compared to the CX-3. Also, cargo volume between the two SUVs isn’t close either. The HR-V provides drivers with over 58 cubic feet of maximum cargo space while the CX-3 counters with 44.5 cubic feet. Honda vehicles are legendary for providing a large volume of cargo space, but the disparity between these two SUVs is shocking. This is a clear win for the HR-V.

Technology Comparison: 2017 HR-V vs. 2017 CX-3

Mazda scores points in this category due to the fact that the base model of the CX-3 comes standard with 7-inch touchscreen, rearview camera, Bluetooth, USB ports and voice recognition technology. HR-V shoppers have to step up a trim level from the base model in order to receive touchscreen display along with push button ignition, automatic climate control system, heated front seats, Honda LaneWatch and other technology. Both SUVs offer similar levels of available tech features, but we’re giving the nod to the CX-3 in this category due to the standard tech features included on its base model.

Comparison Summary: 2017 HR-V versus 2017 CX-3

So who comes out on top? This was a very close competition. Both the Honda HR-V and the Mazda CX-3 claim wins in one of the categories, while another was a too close to call. Despite all that, we’re recommending the Honda HR-V as the better overall value versus the Mazda CX-3 due to a few important factors. For starters, the interior space differential between the two vehicles is just too glaring to ignore. The CX-3 may be a great subcompact SUV for the driver, but when it comes to accommodating passengers – it falls way short. The HR-V also holds its value much better than the CX-3. That fact tends to offset the little bit of extra money you would need to pay to get similar tech features inside each vehicle. Both of these subcompact SUVs are great values, however, we think that the Honda HR-V nudges ahead when taking all the facts into consideration.
